The Directors

Ang Lee

Jim Jarmusch

“I’ve been adrift, floating like Pi, all my life.”
— Ang Lee (on returning to Taiwan to film Life of Pi)

“Often my characters are outsiders who are against conforming to the world.”
— Jim Jarmusch

The Thesis

Through the juxtaposition of Ang Lee and Jim Jarmusch’s films, the common thread of “outsider-ness” is revealed. The dichotomy of Lee’s Taiwanese culture and American education reflects in his American films in which outsiders attempt to conform to rigid social codes, while Jarmusch’s notion that he views America “through a foreigner’s eyes” allows him to create American films about outsiders rejecting social conformity, although he himself is American. Through the play of foreign and native, conformity and nonconformity, a spotlight can be shone on outsiders both as characters in and directors of film.
